THE “FACCIATONE “: the unfinished part of the cathedral of Siena

In 1339 it was decided to expand the Duomo of Siena in order to create the largest Christian temple in the world.
The “FACCIATONE” is the unfinished part of the new cathedral, of which the present one was supposed to become only the transept.
Due to the bad plague of 1348, the works stopped and was created only one side of the central three naves.
It is possible to reach the top of the “Facciatone” as to see the most beautiful view of Siena.

Nel 1339 fu deciso di ampliare il Duomo di Siena in modo da creare il più grande tempio della cristianità nel mondo.
Il “FACCIATONE” è la parte non conclusa della nuova cattedrale, della quale la presente doveva esserne solo il transetto.
A causa della grande peste del 1348 i lavori furono interrotti e fu costruita solo un lato delle tre navate centrali.
È possibile salire sulla sommità del “FACCIATONE” per ammirare la più bella vista su Siena.
