“IL CASTELLO DI SAMMEZZANO” is a building in Moorish style desired by the family of Ximenes d’Aragona in 1606.
Later the castle was inherited by Ferdinando Ximenes who, between 1853 and 1889,
made a new renovation project to which he dedicated most of his life, furnishing the interior part of the castle in the manner of the East.
Ferdinando Ximenez was an eclectic and intellectual person, very popular during the second half of the nineteenth century, when Florence was the Capital city.
Even the beautiful park of the castle is a result of Ferdinando’s work: he enriched it with exotic species, such as redwood and cedar of Lebanon.
After the war the castle became a luxury hotel but, since 1999, it is unfortunately in a state of neglect.
The castle is normally closed but it is possible to visit it through special openings.
