The “TORRE DEL MANGIA”is localized in “Piazza del Campo”, the main square in SIENA and, with its 87 meters, is the third tallest tower In Italy.
The “TORRE DEL MANGIA”, a real masterpiece made of brick and travertine, is the civic tower of Municipal Palace.
The building of the tower was started in 1325 and ended in 1348, the year of the great plague. For a long time the architect, Agostino Di Giovanni, had been considered the unique creator of the tower. In fact, through the consultation of the documents in the State Archives of Siena, it seems that many artists contributed to the realization of the work, including the Di Rinaldo, brothers from Perugia.
The bell is called by senese “Sunto”, as it was dedicated to our Lady of the Assumption( Madonna dell’Assunta).
The “TORRE DEL MANGIA” owes its special name to the first bell ringer, whose name was “mangia-guadagni”(eat what you earn), who was quite a spendthrift !
